Plant Biotechnology: An in vitro Farming approach
Plant biotechnology is a fascinating & challenging field of research with a wide scope & immense possibilities of producing improved varieties of plants free from pest & diseases, their mass production within a short time though tissue culture. The growth in agriculture & horticulture during the period of green revolution has led to the improvement in the life styles of the people living in the rural areas. The development in the field of biotech has opened new vistas of improved productivity & would lead to a greater genetic diversity.
The area of plant biotechnology is now burgeoning. Various plant cell & tissue culture methods have resulted in the production of useful plants or products. The methods are being used to generate new plant varieties & to produce valuable compounds that would be difficult to obtain by chemical synthesis. The ability to culture plant cells is also central to the use of genetic engineering techniques for introducing new genes into plants species.
Today, plant tissue culture technology is being used for accelerated propagation of ornamental, flowering and food plants. The usefulness of tissue culture technology for large scale multiplication for commercial purpose is well understood. Many commercial growers are using this technique |

Career in Plant Biotechnology:
Plant Biotechnology provides great potential in the area of plant breeding. Today crop plants have been optimized over thousands of the years by means of traditional breeding methods. As a result, these crops are only remotely similar to their “natural” predecessors. As there is increasing popularity and explosive growth, there are plenty of opportunities available in the field of plant biotechnology. You can be a research scientist, quality control officer or production in charge in seed processing industry.
You also have opportunity in marketing, you would manage and devise campaigns aimed at particular customer areas with advertising agencies and maintaining visible presence at agriculture convention and trade shows. Post graduate students in the plant biotechnology can explore job as a plant breeder, research associate, research scientist in reaserch & development department of Seed Industries.
