“BIO-INFORMATICS IS THE FIELD OF INTEGRATING BIOLOGY AND COMPUTERS TO IMPROVE THE DISCOVERY OF NEW MEDICAL BREAKTHROUGH”

The aim of bioinformatics is to collect the wealth of biological information and use it to improve the living standards of human beings. Bioinformatics is applied in various fields like human health, environment, agriculture, biotechnology and energy to advance the biomedical research and development. It is used in the field of molecular medicine to produce the customized medicines for the prevention or cure of the disease. Bioinformatics is today a very rapidly growing field all over the world. Therefore, one can start a career in Bioinformatics and find all over the world. Therefore, one can start a career in Bioinformatics and find employment opportunities in biotechnology, biomedical and pharmaceutical sciences, in industries, hospitals and research institutions.

Bioinformatics focuses more on the development of practical tools for data management & analysis like display of genome information & sequence analysis. Bioinformatics supports a board spectrum of research that includes determining the biological significance of the data & develops practical computational tools needed to mine the data for new information. Bioinformatics assist this new information with practical application such as the identification of new targets for drug therapy.

In the present scenario, when every part of life is more or less directly or indirectly dependent on computers, the most intellectual hybrid of biological information and computer technology is Bio-informatics. Presently it is an emerging career for those Biology students who have keen interest in computer and software. It is a branch of science that deals with the use of computer technology to handle and maintain biological information. Apart from Agriculture and Aquaculture applications, the focus of Bio-tech industry has been on producing new drugs. In search for new drugs, the pharmaceutical industry would now depend more on biological and medical sciences rather than relaying on Organic chemistry. In particular, the human genome project to discover every single gene in existence will also reshape the process of drug discovery. For example genetically engineered bacteria can produce insulin used for treating diabetics. In order to make sense of all the data being produced on genes, and genetic make-up of all kinds of species, entirely new field called BIO- INFORMATICS has emerged. Bio-informatics involves the identification of pattern in gene variation and the design of custom molecule that would attract suspect gene and proteins. Considerable research work on Bio-informatics is in progress both in academic institutions and industries. Bio-informatics is the study of biological information as it passes from its storage site in the genome to the various gene products in the cell. Generally speaking, Bio-informatics involves the creation and the development of advanced information and computational technologies for problems in molecular biology. Bio-informatics is truly the science of coming century and now is the right time for those whose interests span Biology and Computers to take advantage of the exciting opportunity.

The Scope:

Bio-informatics as a field of study is becoming increasingly important due to the interest of pharmaceutical industry in genome projects, which compromise a key segment of the discipline. There is a vital need to harness this information for medical diagnostic and therapeutic uses, and there are opportunities for other industrial applications. This field is evolving rapidly, which makes it challenging for biotechnology professions to keep up with recent advancements. Bio-informatics specialists are involved in all aspects of collecting/assembling and analyzing the staggering quantities of information that are being generalized by the human genome project, as well as genome projects for other animals, plants and disease causing micro organism.

The Need:

After every 14 months (approximate) the contents of nucleotide data base doubles and after every two years, the quantity of genes and protein structures also doubles. In such condition when on one hand the base pairs in Genbank are enormously increasing and
on the other, the sequencing projects are producing more and more nucleotide sequences. Bio-informatics is found to be the topmost solution for managing the cumbersome information. Bio-informatics or bio computing, being a triplet of biology, mathematics and computer , prove to be an effective means of handling, accessing, analyzing and integrating biological data.
